Why any of this matters

This is the reason for every other page in this book.

Skip this — take me to Part 1 →

Think about the last time you needed a mechanic in a town you did not know.

You did not open a phone book. You picked up your phone, typed mechanic near me, and looked at the little map. Three shops. You looked at the stars. You read two or three lines of what other people wrote. Then you called one.

You chose in about twenty seconds. And you never called the other two.

Your customers do exactly the same thing to you.

84%of people use Google to check a local business before they use it.
4%never read reviews at all. Everyone else does.
20%of what decides who Google shows first is your reviews. It was 16% three years ago.

That is not a marketing fashion. That is how people decide now — including the woman with water coming through her ceiling at nine at night.

By the time your phone rings, she has already chosen

She looked at three plumbers. She picked one. You cannot change her mind — she made it up before she called. She made it up on that little map, before she knew your name.

So what puts you at the top of the map? Google decides who to show. About one fifth of that choice is your reviews. How many you have. How good they are. And how new they are. That share goes up every year.

New is the word most people miss. Old reviews stop helping you. A shop with forty reviews from three years ago loses to a shop with twelve from this month. The people who study this say it plainly: when you stop getting new reviews, you start to drop down the list.

That is why this is not a job you do once. It is a small thing you do after every job, for as long as you are in business.

Two things happen at once

One — you go above the first page.

Look at your own phone next time you search for something near you. The map box with three businesses sits above the normal blue links. It is the first thing on the screen. Many people look at nothing else.

Reviews are how you get into that box. The same reviews also help your website in the normal list below it. One habit helps you twice.

You are not trying to get on to the first page. You are trying to be above it.

Two — your reputation starts to sell for you.

A price list does not sell. A sign on your truck does not sell. Thirty people saying “he came out at eleven at night and charged exactly what he quoted” — that sells. And it sells while you are asleep, up a ladder, or under a sink with both hands full.

You never have to tell anyone you are honest and fast. Your customers already said it. In public. In their own words. Where the next customer is looking. Nothing you write about yourself is worth that much. And it costs you thirty seconds a job.

Now the good news. It is very good.

96 out of 100 customers say they are willing to write a review.
Only 29 out of 100 wrote one last year.

Read those two numbers again. Almost everybody is willing. Almost nobody does it.

The difference is not that people are lazy. It is that nobody asked them.

Your happy customers would write one. They just never think of it. You fixed the pipe, said thank you, and drove away.

That is this whole system in one sentence: the app asks them for you.

You finish the job. You change two words on your phone. The app sends the text. You never write anything, never chase anybody, and never feel like you are begging.

What that does to your week

Say you finish six jobs a week, and only half of those people write something. That is three new reviews a week. Twelve a month. In three months you have more fresh reviews than most of your competitors have collected in their whole life.

Then the map changes. You move up. The phone rings more. And the people calling already trust you, because thirty other people told them to.

That is what “grow your reputation, grow your revenue” actually means. Reviews → position → calls → jobs.

The part that is up to you

None of this works if you skip the step. The app cannot ask for you if you never tell it the job is finished. That one action takes about thirty seconds, on your phone, before you drive away. Everything else depends on it.

The rest of this book only shows you which buttons to press.

Start with Part 1. It sets up your phone. You only do it once.

Where the numbers come from (for your records — you do not need to read this): consumer figures are BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2025 (84% use Google for local reviews; 4% never read reviews; 96% willing to write one, 29% did in the past year). The ranking figures and the point about freshness are from Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors (review signals ≈20% of local pack ranking in the 2026 report, up from ≈16% in 2023; the panel weighs review signals for ordinary web results too). The six-jobs-a-week example is an illustration, not a promise — your own numbers will differ.

Two ways the call ends
  • They want you to come. Do nothing with the card now. When you have given a price, it moves to Warm Lead.
  • They said no, or you got no answer three times. Move the card to Cold Lead. That is step 6, They said no.

Status sits directly under Stage. Then press the green Save.
Nothing is saved until you press SavePress Cancel, or the back arrow, and both words go back to how they were. No review is sent.
Why two words and not one? They sound the same. They are not. One is for you. One is for the system. You need both.

Stage

For your eyes

Stage is which column the job sits in on your board.

Setting it to Work Completed slides the card into the Work Completed column. Now you can see the job is finished without opening it.

That is all it does. Nothing is sent to anybody.

Status

For the system

Status tells the app what really happened to the job.

Won means "I did the work." That is the word the app is listening for.

The moment you save it, the app texts your customer and asks for a review.

Stage only → your board looks right. Your customer hears nothing.
Status only → the review goes out, but the job still looks unfinished on your board.
Both → board right, review sent. This is what you want.
One way to remember itStage is where the job sits. Status is what happened to it. A job can sit in the last column and still not be marked as done — that is why there are two.
What happensThe app asks your customer for a review. You write nothing.
5. Check it went outPress Conversations at the bottom. Your customer’s message is at the top of the list. That is the app asking for you.
If nothing is thereThe message did not go. Phone us — do not send one yourself, it will stop the app trying again.
Do not skip WonWon is the word that sends the review. Moving the job to Work Completed on its own sends nothing.
6 They said no Move the card to Cold Lead. ▾
1. Press the two arrows
→
2. Press Cold Lead
A shortcut, for the other columns onlyOn every card there is a small button with two arrows, like this ⇆. It moves a card quickly, without opening it.
It does not send anything. That is why the finished job is not done this way.
What to doPress the two arrows. Press Cold Lead.
What happensThe reminders stop. Nobody is chased for a job they turned down.
Not wastedThey stay on your list. We can come back to them later.
